Peacock Bass | Accommodations | Schedule and Airlines | Rates
I have fished south Florida and Venezuela for peacock bass and was disappointed in both. After I went to Brazil I was sorry I had wasted the money on the others. The peaceful and serene atmosphere is one of the most relaxing, yet invigorating I have ever experienced, not to mention the spectacular peacock bass fishing. My batteries were recharged like never before when I returned from the Amazon.
The fancy yachts of Brazil were not built for fishing trips. When you put guides, clients and all of the staff on a yacht it becomes very crowded. We run a second smaller houseboat along with the Otter that provides a home for our guides and carries all the extra fuel, batteries and spare boat parts. This ensures that our clients are never crowded and the Otter’s fantastic experienced staff makes you the number-one priority.
Once you experience the heart stopping strike and ensuing fight with the Amazon’s peacock bass, the memories will be burned in your mind forever. Many days when I am fishing somewhere, my mind drifts back to the wonderful memories of fighting peacock bass in the Amazon basin.
All of the rivers we fish are the best, producing more peacock bass in excess of 20 lbs. than any other river in South America. The IGFA all tackle world record (27.5lbs) came from the Rio Negro, one of the rivers we fish. The rivers we fish are all the color of dark tea caused by tannic acids. Due to the acid content, mosquitoes can’t breed. So guess what, no mosquitoes. One of the neatest things that I like on these trips is the ability and eagerness of the Otter manager to move if you hit an area hard and the fishing slows down. Most of the time, after you have left the Otter in the morning, you will continuously move down the river fishing new spots. I will never forget the first day when I knew we had covered 10 or 15 miles. I knew we would spend 30 or 40 minutes getting back to the Otter. Imagine my surprise when we cranked up, went around the first river bend in 5 minutes and there was the Otter waiting for us. They had moved during the day with us. I inquired about this, and was informed by the Otter manager that they continuously move to keep us in the new and better territory. This man definitely knows that you can’t beat an area to death. Sometimes at night while I was sleeping the Otter would move 20 or 30 miles down the river to put us in the best possible areas that produced. This is typical of the outstanding service that you can expect on this fishing trip of a lifetime.
